Indigenous African: Akwete Cloth

The fine art of weaving comes to mind when describing this exotic and colourful Nigerian fabric.
Akwete is manufactured in Ndoki, Ukwa, Nigeria- the Eastern part (Igboland), and is commonly worn during special events.
The process of weaving this cloth is painstaking, and can take up to two years to finish just one pair of cloth, making it a rare and unique buy.
It is made of cotton silk, raffia, and the bark of certain trees. This is no ordinary fabric!

  3. I went to school in Ukwa and I am proud to have witnessed first hand the making of this cloth. It is overwhelmingly labour intensive. The cloth is unique and a treasure to behold however, it is often criticised for being heavy.
