Indigenous African- Aso-Oke Cloth
Pronounced as Ah-Shaw-Okay, It originated from South Western Nigeria, (Yoruba-land) and the meaning is 'Top Cloth'.
You will certainly feel out of place, perhaps thinking you have committed an unforgivable act, If you're spotted not wearing Aso-Oke to a traditional Yoruba event.
It is handwoven from locally sourced materials. Continue
ranging from cotton, local silk, bark, goats wool and raffia. It's similar to Akwete featured yesterday but still different.
According to Bolland, (1992) there are evidences of a long use of this textile by the Yoruba's dating back to the 10th and 12th Century AD.
To make just one, the weaver weaves a 40 strip of cloth. The three major types of Aso-Oke are Alari, Sanyan and Etu.
