Forgotten Nigerian Cloth: Yoruba Aso Ipo

Photos from Hardcottage quilts
Aso Ipo meaning "cloth from red cloth" is a red and tan woven patterned Yoruba status cloth.
With a history dating back to the 16th century, Aso Ipo was woven on a vertical loom using weft yarn.
The patterns were dyed blue for the king and also in yellowish-tan with tumeric.
Production of this cloth is thought to have ended in the 70's and can only be found in museums.

I find African fabrics fascinating, packed with creativity and history that's why I feature them. They were certainly woven with lots of love and care.
