Forgotten Nigerian Cloth: Igbo Ukara Cloth

Ukara Cloth                                                          Nsibidi writing

Nsibidi  is a system of signs and symbols that the Igbo and Efik speaking  ancestors used for over a thousand years to communicate their feelings. Igbo Ukara Cloth is covered in Nsibidi representing powerful animals, gongs, and feathers. The cloth is dyed by post-menopausal women, titled young men, and was a symbol of wealth and power.

Who knew our ancestors wrote like that? Who has more information on this cloth?

  4. Yes that's how they communicated. I have seen court documents written in Nsibidi dating back to the 18th Century. Amazing! I wonder if we can find more in Nigeria.

    1. It may be possible to find some; preservation is a source of concern down here

  5. Some male friends were chatting about it online; that's how I got wind of it so I don't even blame anyone who has never heard of it

    1. Silly me, I ignore all what they were saying at first but had to advise myself when the discussion continued
