Ukara Cloth Nsibidi writing |
Nsibidi is a system of signs and symbols that the Igbo and Efik speaking ancestors used for over a thousand years to communicate their feelings. Igbo Ukara Cloth is covered in Nsibidi representing powerful animals, gongs, and feathers. The cloth is dyed by post-menopausal women, titled young men, and was a symbol of wealth and power.
Who knew our ancestors wrote like that? Who has more information on this cloth?
Nsibidi will not be forgotten
ReplyDeleteMost Igbos wouldn't know what this is all about
ReplyDeleteNsibidi?

DeleteYes that's how they communicated. I have seen court documents written in Nsibidi dating back to the 18th Century. Amazing! I wonder if we can find more in Nigeria.
ReplyDeleteIt may be possible to find some; preservation is a source of concern down here
DeleteSome male friends were chatting about it online; that's how I got wind of it so I don't even blame anyone who has never heard of it
ReplyDeleteSilly me, I ignore all what they were saying at first but had to advise myself when the discussion continued
