Go Natural! Go for African Braids!

Recently, I've noticed the number of women on braids are on the decline due to the influence of Brazilian/Indian hair on our community. Whilst I don't condemn those hair as I do wear them sometimes, It will be wonderful for us not to forget this heritage. That's our identity as a people. Other cultures find it fascinating and unique.

I remember as a Journalism student, Naomi Christie, classmate, thought it's a brilliant do and literally forced
me to my stylist all the way to Woolwich to get her hair braided. Her hair is silky and long as expected, she's white. She loved it so much and had it done several times. If others value it, why do we call it ghetto?
The art of braiding dates back to 2630 B.C. Egyptian mummies wore it and there are museum pictures to prove this. In Ancient Africa, braiding wasn't done just for the beauty of it, they were used to communicate a person's rank in the community.
The flamboyant styles tell of wealth and privilege. You can certainly tell a single from a married woman from the braids they have on. Let's appreciate the little things we can actually call our own!

I personally think women look more beautiful and younger on braids. Leave your thoughts?

  2. That's the real African hair do; this era of Brazilian, Indian etc is not real. Africans are not known to have such long hair. Braids are the real hair we have; natural hair is always better than this borrowed and unrealistic flowing hair

  3. These are not braids but pieces of art. It reflects true culture and most of all - not Hollywood.

  4. Nene biko if the braids as shown in this blog is a recruiting call for repopularing the use of braids, i have my doubts but for the shock factor. I have seen better braids in modern times.

I do think that braids look great on woman and they do not fall out unlike the Brazilian or the Indian. I am always getting the plumber out each time I have a Brazilian/Indian hair using guest due to blocked drainage from loose hair.

    1. @Andy, if they had braids on, sure you wouldn't have spent loads on plumbing :)
Go to the high street, you will see Brazilian/indian takeover. They look lovely but the fact that braids are now regarded as ghetto is worrying. The mindset needs to change.

  5. There isn't a better way of telling where a people are coming from than from the way they dress and look. For the woman, her hair is the chief determinant of her look. Her look on the other hand, is all, in my view, I she's got! You are blessed Nene. For putting your thoughts in this perspective; I feel very proud of you dearest!
